Martlets Fall to KO

In the week's second matchup, the Martlets faced off against the Wyverns of Kingswood Oxford. The first time these two teams played, the Martlets managed to pull off a one-point victory. Knowing this would be another tough battle, the girls entered the gym with great energy and focus. In the first quarter, the Martlets were playing with unity and togetherness. All five girls who stepped on the floor brought focus and communication on defense. The Martlets and the Wyverns traded baskets early. Avauni Anderson ‘25 and Bella Lilien ‘27 scored for Westminster, while Emma Isakoff ‘25 and Adam Dembele ‘25 continue to showcase their defensive prowess. The Martlets continued their run into the second quarter, keeping the game close. The first half was one of the best the Martlets had played all season. They were helping one another on defense, sharing the ball, and picking each other up when they were down. Going into halftime, the Martlets had a clear game plan to continue their hard work. However, things didn't go as planned. In the second half, the Martlets could not score a single basket. Shooting from the floor and the foul line went cold. This was sustainable during the third quarter, however, the Martlets could not hold off the Wyverns forever. Great defensive efforts by Ainslee Deptula ‘28, Arielle Anderson ‘28, and Janet Kiburi ‘26 helped the Martlets hold on for a little longer. The unanswered baskets by KO left the Martlets scrambling to score. Valiant attempts by Suri Dong ‘28 and Piper Lundin ‘26 were much appreciated by the Martlets. In the end, the lack of scoring was what hurt the Martlets the most. All who stepped on the floor gave everything they had.
